Amazon is an American technology company most widely known for its e-commerce platform amazon.com — the world's third-largest online marketplace. Founder Jeff Bezos is considered to be the single richest person in the world, with a net worth of 191 billion dollars as of May 2021. Amazon has received criticism for its anti-competitive practices, tax avoidance and exploitative work culture.
The company tracks the performance of its workers and penalizes delays and other infractions. Delivery drivers described having to urinate in plastic bottles in order to not lose time over finding and using a bathroom along their route. A tweet by Wisconsin representative Mark Pocan lead to news reports and more workers coming out to confirm the fact. Amazon denied that its workers had to urinate in bottles in a reply tweet that was soon met with criticism and ridicule.
Later, Amazon apologized for disputing the claim in a blog post. Therein, the practice is described as an "industry-wide issue" that Amazon would like to resolve: "We don’t yet know how, but will look for solutions."
Employees of Amazon fulfillment centers also describe having a hard time taking bathroom breaks.
